Do I invite my lonely neighbor over… or am I opening a door I’ll regret? I recently moved into a new place and met one of my neighbors. He’s an older guy, seems nice, but ever since we met he’s been texting me a lot — sometimes late at night, and I’m pretty sure he’s been drinking when he does. Honestly, I think he might just be lonely. Part of me wants to be a good neighbor and invite him over next time we BBQ. But I’m also an introvert and really enjoy spending my weekends quietly with my wife or with a small circle of friends. My fear is that one invitation turns into: “What are you guys doing this weekend?” Every. Single. Weekend. Do I invite him over and risk opening the floodgates, or keep the neighbor relationship friendly-but-across-the-fence?

He could be chill AF — and if he’s not, you can just set boundaries and ease on the invites. Loneliness is a real thing and the golden rule may apply here — treat him as you would want to be treated.

Sometimes the excitement of meeting someone new can wear off and it might simmer things down.
