I farted on an elevator. I tried so hard to hold it in. But I just couldn’t

Laugh it off and make a joke to ease the tension

The Jury’s Read

The room feels that handling this awkward moment with a bit of dignity is key. Ignoring it seems to resonate with many, as the act itself is universal and often unavoidable. There's a shared understanding that a lighthearted gesture might ease the tension, but outright apologies could backfire, drawing more attention to the situation. There's also an acknowledgment that sometimes, it's best to just let it go quietly, as they may just want to move on with their day, too.

Where they split:

A minority viewed a simple apology as a way to model accountability and show consideration for others.

I’d just exit the elevator without saying anything — it happens sometimes and it seems this one was not malicious. Let he who is without farts cast the first stone. We all been there from time to time. Just silently apologize telepathically and exit on your floor.

You didn’t know them, anyway and he who smelt it dealt it.. 🤫 plus it wasn’t malicious and everybody farts. Tomorrow will bring something totally different to be offended by

Just leave mate — apologizing makes it worse and they likely won’t forgive you just because you’ve apologized. Now they know who to be upset at bc of the stench. Oftentimes, people won’t even do a smell check until someone’s apologized so saying sorry for farting will likely bring on a smell check by the other people in the elevator with you. Keep your dignity and walk out.

A simple “excuse me” and maybe a headnod models accountability and lets others know you feel bad about the situation. To pass gas in a confined box with others is pretty brutal so I think a simple apology goes a long way!
