**AITA for telling my roommate’s girlfriend the truth about how much rent he actually pays?** I’ve lived with my roommate for a little over a year. We split a two-bedroom apartment, but not evenly. I make more money, wanted the larger bedroom, and agreed to pay about 70% of the rent. He pays the rest. It’s never been an issue between us. A few months ago, he started dating someone seriously. She’s over a lot, and I like her, but I started noticing he would make weird comments whenever money came up. Things like: “I basically carry this apartment.” Or: “If I moved out, he’d be screwed.” At first I thought he was joking. Then last weekend the three of us were having dinner and his girlfriend started talking about how responsible he is with money. She said something like, “I honestly don’t know how you afford to pay most of the rent here and still save so much.” I looked at him because… what? He immediately changed the subject. Later that night she brought it up again and said she admired that he was helping me out financially. So I said: “Just so you know, it’s actually the opposite. I pay most of the rent.” She thought I was joking. I told her the exact split. My roommate got pissed and said there was absolutely no reason for me to embarrass him like that. Apparently he had been telling her for months that he paid around 70% because I was “going through a rough patch.” I asked him why he was lying about me. He said he wasn’t trying to make me look bad, he just wanted her to see that he was financially stable and dependable. I told him he could have done that without inventing a story where he was basically subsidizing my life. His girlfriend got quiet and left not long after. Now he says I intentionally humiliated him in front of her and that a good friend would have pulled him aside instead of correcting him at the table. I’ll admit I probably could have handled it privately. But I also feel like once you start using me as a character in a fake story to impress your girlfriend, I’m allowed to correct the record. He says I may have seriously damaged his relationship over something that “didn’t affect me at all.” AITA for telling her the truth right then and there?

Question for the jury

Was I out of line?

The jury is split

2–2–2

Tied233%

No, he created the situation by lying and you clarified the truth.

Tied233%

No, you had the right to correct the misinformation in the moment.

Tied233%

Yes, you should have addressed it privately later.

0

Yes, it was his relationship and you should have stayed out of it.

The Jury’s Read

You navigated a tricky situation, and the room largely sympathizes with your perspective. Your roommate’s choice to misrepresent financial facts about your living arrangement struck several jurors as dishonest, overshadowing the idea of loyalty in friendships. While most felt your instinct to correct the misinformation was valid, they suggested that addressing it privately could have avoided unnecessary tension. Balancing honesty with sensitivity is delicate; perhaps a private conversation first could have fostered a different outcome.

Where they split:

A minority felt that addressing the issue publicly was justified since it involved both your name and finances.

Yeah it was shady of him to do that and could have been discussed privately. If he continued thereafter it may have been appropriate. You’re not wrong for doing it publicly but it could have been a better learning experience for him had you pulled him aside and encouraged him to right it himself.

I think addressing it in the moment wasn't necessarily wrong, but that addressing it in private later on would have been the better call. But in that discussion, setting a boundary (like "if you misrepresent how our finances are divided, I will correct it in the moment going forward").

You def had the right to say something but also I feel like it would have been nice if you handled it privately. As a gf myself I would rather hear the truth from someone like the roommate esp since you said she was over a lot so it sounds like yall are pretty familiar with each other
