I’m a 23 year old female. My parents separated when I was 2. Always had an on and off relationship with my bio dad. He got with my “step-mom” and had my 2 baby sisters with her. I got really close with “step-mom” when I was 18 and of course with my baby sisters despite the age gap. The relationship between my “step-mom” and bio dad was not good and they had a toxic on and off relationship. Being that I was close with her we bonded over my dad and would vent to each other about him. 2 years ago, I started working on my relationship with my dad and would spend time with him when he had my little sisters (they had 50/50 custody). He would tell me things about my “step-mom” like she only wanted to be close to me to keep tabs on him (I ignored this for a long time). Seeing how my dad was with my baby sisters was very different to how he was with me and my other sister growing up. It seemed like he was trying to change despite the things my step-mom would say. This caused me to distance myself and remove her from social media because she would make post about my dad that I felt were uncomfortable for me to see. (She also was talking bad about my mom while pretending to be her friend. Which made me feel like I couldn’t be close with her because my mom was genuine towards her).2 years ago she took my dad to court for a restraining order and full custody of my baby sisters. I attended court with my dad because he was nervous and asked me to. I put myself in the middle of what was happening between them which led to her not allowing me to have any relationship with my baby sisters. It has been 2 years and I have not been able to see or speak to them. I am the oldest out of all my siblings (siblings: 4 with my mom / 2 baby sisters from bio dad) and there is nothing I love more than being a big sister. It has been extremely heartbreaking going from seeing my 2 baby sisters all the time and picking them up to stay overnights with me to nothing at all. My step mom has isolated me from my baby sisters because she feels like I took my dads side and got in the middle. There is some truth to that because I told my dad some things that he wanted to know about my step mom from us being friends that I shouldn’t have said. I didn’t tell him out of malice or ill will towards her I just felt bad for my dad in the moment and came out with it. I tried to protect her in telling him the truth and also ease my dads mind at the same time. Looking back now, I realize I shouldn’t have said anything. I even question if my dad was manipulating me to get the information he wanted or if he was truly struggling mentally that day. Is there any advice for my situation and reconciliation with my step-mom? I want to continue my relationship with my baby sisters but don’t know where to go from here. I’ve tried reaching out many times over social media and have been ignored. Is there any advice that could be given for my situation? I’d even love to hear if any other siblings have gone through this type of pain. My heart hurts everyday and I feel empty without them in my life. My situation feels deeply lonely…

The Jury’s Read

You seem to be caught in a web of family dynamics that has left you feeling deeply isolated from your sisters. The room leans toward encouraging you to reach out to your baby sisters directly. This approach feels like a positive, straightforward way to express your love for them, without the added complications of existing tensions. There’s a shared belief that protecting your emotional well-being means setting clear boundaries and perhaps refraining from direct interaction with your step-mom for now, especially if it adds to your distress. Healing this rift won't be easy, but focusing on your connection with your sisters can be a first step toward future reconciliations with the adults involved.

Where they split:

Some jurors see merit in involving a mediator to facilitate communication with your step-mom, emphasizing the importance of working through these issues constructively.

A hybrid between messaging sisters and writing a letter to stepmom. I believe direct communication is the antidote in this situation and setting boundaries moving forward of not triangulating with either of them to form coalition against another. Set a rule — I won’t talk about him/her when they aren’t present for the conversation. I say letter because a phone call might trigger strong emotions and influence what is said. A letter is also demonstration of effort in communication.

Sounds like both dad and stepmom were manipulating things on some level- and the fact that she wasn’t that nice to your genuine bio mom on social media- not even considering how what she posted would affect YOU left you no other choice but to block her so the path of least drama looks like messaging your little sisters directly so they know they’re loved and missed

I think reaching out to your baby sisters could be a great start — letting them know that you’re thinking of them and keeping it light. I would refrain from trying to reach out over social media if you’re trying to reconnect with your stepmom and maybe see her in person or call her. Also if you haven’t tried therapy, it could be really be helpful to have a space to process this situation, your emotions, and how to navigate the layered interpersonal stuff and communication patterns in the family. It seems like your communication with sisters being cut off is causing the most distress so I’d start with sending them a lighthearted message! You’ve got this — we all go through family drama — and although you can’t change your family you can change how you relate, respond, and communicate with them! Best of luck 😌

It was not your fault or responsibility to bear the weight or be a mediator/middle man between two adults in a toxic relationship. You were forced to take sides and naturally you chose your father. Your step mother seems to have manipulated situations and if you are not with her and against your own mother and father- you are as good as dead and that’s her own issues and toxicity.

I’m sorry that you and your sisters have been put in the middle of this. I would try to keep things focused on them and working with a meditator, therapist, etc. to communicate with your step mom to continue having a relationship with them. When appropriate, I think it’s probably best to establish boundaries with all parties so that something rash doesn’t happen.
