My girlfriend often borrows toiletries and other small things from my apartment when she stays over. I know she’s struggling financially, and I’d genuinely be happy to help her or buy things for her if she asked. What’s bothering me is that she usually just takes or uses things without asking first. The individual items aren’t a big deal, but the pattern is starting to make me uncomfortable. I’m torn between feeling petty over small stuff and wondering whether the lack of asking shows a bigger issue with boundaries or respect.

The Jury’s Read

You’re not being petty; your feelings about her taking things without asking resonate strongly with the jury. They see this as a significant boundary issue, where clear communication is essential. Most jurors felt that addressing it directly, yet kindly, is crucial for both clarity and respect in your relationship. While her financial struggles might explain her actions, the importance of consent in sharing your belongings should not be overlooked. It's about building a foundation of trust and understanding.

Where they split:

A minority felt the situation might not be significant if it’s just minor toiletries for short stays, suggesting a more lenient approach.

It’s embarrassing to let other people see our sensitive side about some things. But bear the discomfort of letting her know you don’t approve of her taking things without permission. And create a boundary. No more taking stuff without permission. Yes it’s a red flag as to her habits in general but right now it is focused on this only, so stay with it and nip it in the bud. Her inability to afford things is a separate issue from her taking things without permission. She actually is stealing.

Talking is definitely a way out this way you will be able to see how she reacts and does she even respect the fact that you're showing concern regarding something also don't go to harsh keep it polite respectful. Human reactions definitely shows if they're worth keeping or not so definitely talk to her and remain a gentleman

Probably how she rolls in relationships- you’re gonna want to get to know her better to decide if it’s going to work out, so definitely talk it over

Find a way to let her know you noticed it man and if you can… do it in a non confrontational way. This could be embarrassing for her so let her know that you’ve noticed and ask her to share why she didn’t think to ask you. Also — people show us who they are with their actions so maybe be vigilant with learning whether this is a one off behavior because of hard times or a character trait that might be pointing to a more pervasive m.o. Either way, definitely bring it up. It’s your stuff and she’s taking it right under your nose.

I was conflicted with my answer becuase 1. I think talking about how your feeling is beneficial for your relationship as holding something like this in will only turn into a bigger problem. 2. Your quite vague with the things shes taking and using. Now if shes staying the weekend and she uses your tooth paste or shampoo, I would think its could be petty because do you expect her not to shower if she stays 2 days, especially if there are some couple activities involved, in you know what I mean... if it is that's sort of a thing, I would maybe take her to a store and say "hey let's grab you some personal items you can keep and use at my place".. but if shes taking your toilet paper back to her house, that warrants a gental conversation, because as you mentioned you know shes struggling financially. And if your willing to help her out with that sort of a thing maybe she just doesnt know your willing.
