My best friend got the job I told her I was desperate to get and I honestly dont know how I’m supposed to feel about it. I’ve been trying to leave my current job for months, I hate it there, my manager is awful and my friend knows basically all of this because I’ve vented to her about it constantly. A few weeks ago I found a position at a company I REALLY wanted to work for, better pay, better hours, closer to home… basically exactly what I’ve been looking for. I sent her the posting because I was excited and asked if she could look over my resume before I applied. She did, gave me advice, helped me rewrite part of my cover letter and even texted me before my interview saying I was gonna crush it. I didn’t get the job. They emailed me saying they went with another candidate and yeah I was really disappointed but whatever, it happens. Then this morning she calls me and says she has something “kind of awkward” to tell me… she got the job. I seriously thought she was joking at first. Apparently when I sent her the posting she looked into the company, realized she was qualified too and applied and just never told me. So she was literally interviewing for the same job while helping me prepare for mine. I asked her why she didn’t tell me and she said she didnt want to make me nervous or turn it into a competition and she honestly didn’t think she’d get it, then she said she knew I’d probably take it personally which made me even more mad because if you KNEW I’d take it personally then why hide it?? I know the job wasn’t mine and she had every right to apply and obviously the company liked her more so maybe I’m just jealous and embarrassed, but I keep thinking about her looking at my resume and telling me good luck before my interview knowing she had applied too and it just feels really shitty. She texted me after saying she really hopes this doesn’t affect our friendship and I haven’t responded because I genuinely dont know what to say yet. Am I wrong for feeling betrayed or is applying for the job fair game and I’m making this into something it isn’t?

The Jury’s Read

It’s clear the room feels strongly that your friend’s actions were a breach of trust. Many jurors saw her choice to apply while assisting you as not just unfortunate, but intentionally misleading. They sense that her decision might reflect a deeper insensitivity to your feelings, especially knowing your struggles at work. A few jurors suggested taking a step back before responding, emphasizing the need for reflection and clear communication moving forward. It seems the majority genuinely believe this situation warrants a serious conversation about honesty and boundaries in your friendship.

Where they split:

Most felt betrayal was evident, though a couple believe in more time to process and discuss the future of the friendship.

Yes she betrayed you and I would distance yourself from her at this point. What she did was unkind and dishonest. If she would do this, she will eventually show this side of herself again. This was not a mistake. It was intentional. And you are not obliged to stick around for her second act. I’m sorry you have had to endure this emotional whiplash.

When I started reading I immediately felt the betrayal. Like if I knew my friend was struggling at a current job and has been wanting to leave and she found a good job and sent me the link, I would NEVER apply, no matter how much I wanted it. Like thats such a weird thing to do to your best friend..

Honestly I believe she is guilty of lying by omission. If she knows you well enough to think it would make you nervous or competitive, then she knew how her getting this job would make you feel. While she had every right to apply, she should have let you know so that you wouldn't be gobsmacked when something like this happened. This feels like she hid it on purpose and only told you when she couldn't anymore. That means she wouldn't have told you if she didn't get it and that is lying by omission.

Sounds like your taking some time to cool off before responding. This does 2 things: 1) let's her know she f'd up friendship wise and 2) let's you reflect on the future. Obviously, you are close enough to trust her for help, share the excitement and likely bounce back from this. This lows you to establish better boundaries. Use this as a learning experience. Grab a bottle and sit down, clear the air, talk about your feelings and set the expectations for moving forward. If anything, your friendship will get stronger. Maybe she prevented you from moving into a shittier job... And if not, now you have someone on the inside for the next opening.

I think talking with her about feeling betrayed will show you if this is a friend you want to continue to have in your life
