Missed my bf’s huge graduation as a specific type of first responder that he’s been trying to become since we were teens. He never told me the calander date of it, only sent me the zoom link. And I but his graduation on the week afterward genuinely thinking it was then. Love this man to shreds but ever since missing to log onto his zoom graduation he says his love towards me is now more conditional and that there’s been a weird feeling between us he gets whenever we are hanging around that is always there and he doesn’t know if it will ever go away. I’m not really sure what to do as for the past month I’ve been trying to give him space, show how much I appreciate him more, plan fun things for us to do and do them, I’ve been going to his work for all their events and charities, helping out his family with things , and also work on my own organization and stress. Btw before this nothing happened before. This was a first and I’m about 100% a last time thing. My therapist wants me to ask him for forgiveness but knowing him it feels like he’d see that as disrespectful to his feelings and inappropriate to ask. And idk if I’ve just been hanging around with him so much that I’d agree but I do feel like those potential feelings are very valid. He still says he feels weird energy between us and is still processing. There’s a lot going on in my life atm that is making me feel really bad already and I think he sees that so has been trying not to bring up anything. I feel like he’s been thinking about breaking up with me but isn’t doing it because 1. He’s worried I’m going to be really upset and not able to handle it (I definitely can handle a breakup. Things happen. life moves on) 2. He doesn’t want to completely part with me yet because he gets intense spells of missing me even when he’s upset at me and I don’t feel like it’s healthy. He doesn’t compliment me like he used to, he doesn’t want to be intimate anymore, and he’s taken back plans he’s had for us. He doesn’t talk about the future of us anymore and I’ve just been following his lead. I don’t want to be in a relationship where marking the wrong date on the calander and missing a zoom link means never trusting me 100% again. I reread his letters saying how I’m his rock and all this shit and now I’m just here thinking how could I hurt someone I love this much this way? Don’t get me wrong, I’m still so sad about missing it and there’s no other side of that. I just don’t know what to do now. My mom literally sent me an article over email about toxic relationships and has been telling me the whole family wants him out of my life already. I don’t feel like I can break up though because ultimately I was the one who fucked up and the best thing I can do is to show it won’t happen again by being there every time in the future. Every time I mention my current feelings about it I end up crying and it makes me feel like I’m coming off as manipulative to make him feel bad for me but honestly I’m just stuck and conflicted.

The Jury’s Read

This situation feels deeply imbalanced, with your boyfriend's reaction suggesting a shift towards conditional love, which isn’t a healthy foundation for a relationship. There's a clear sense among the jury that while missing his graduation is unfortunate, it shouldn't dictate the dynamics of your relationship moving forward. You're experiencing significant emotional distress, and prolonging this discomfort could lead to more damage for both of you. It seems as though the jury feels that breaking up is the healthier choice, allowing you each to move on and reassess your needs and boundaries.

Where they split:

A minority thinks giving it a little more time might help, but the overall sentiment leans towards ending things now for your own emotional well-being.

I’m getting the feeling from what you wrote that you’re unsure about the future of the relationship. If it had been my graduation and it was important to me that you were there, I would have made sure you knew the date and talked about it with you beforehand, not just sent you a Zoom link without any other communication. I don’t know how old you are, but if you’re in your early 20’s, my thought is that there are already signs of trouble, and you seem like a pretty rational and self-aware person. If you’ve been together for a long time, you may just not know anything else except this relationship, which makes sense. If it’s meant to be, it’ll be. But if it’s causing you distress long-term, it might be time to break up.

Yeah nah, fuck all that shit. Hes being manipulative and toxic with that. I get his graduation was a huge deal, but to tot give you a date, and just send a link.. is not very grown man energy. Ya know. And hes gonna lose trust and start giving his love conditionally.. thats not a relationship worth staying in and its only going to get worse.. if you stay he'll realize he can treat you this way over any little thing. And it'll become your entire life. Love shouldn't be conditional. Dump him.

People show you who they are in tough situations. You missed his graduation ceremony — things like that are bound to happen in life. Yeah it sucks a little but those type of things should be felt, forgiven, learned and moved on from. To also label a shift to “conditional love” is telling — I love you only if you meet every expectation and I’ll hold it against you thereafter if you fail. This seems like a distortion on his end that needs to be worked on not have you punished for. People also treat you the way you teach them to and if you’re tolerating his punishment and trying to win him back constantly he has that emotional leverage on you and that’s not a healthy dynamic. Try and set up a therapy session to mediate both of you alls feelings and if he’s willing to work through it great and if not, do both of you all a favor and break it off.

Love shouldn’t come with conditions. It’s understandable that he would’ve been upset and hurt by the situation, but he has got you groveling and thinking you’re not a good partner over a miscommunication and a misunderstanding on a date on the calendar. I think if this is really the right relationship for you, you should be able to work through anything with healthy communication and understanding of where the other person is coming from. If you’re able to do that here, fantastic, but if you’re noticing behaviors that prove otherwise it’s probably best not to drag it out anymore than it needs to be.
